Frozen semen
I own a FC and someone asked me if I'd ship frozen semen. What do the vets charge to 'extract' it and how much does it cost to ship? Anything else you can tell me is greatly appreciated.
Re: Frozen semen
The initial collection and freeze is usually around 300.00 depending on your vet of course. Then it would cost the person who wants the frozen semen the stud fee and the shipping for the semen. A vet has to do it in a container that the buyer has to give a deposit on and the shipping alone runs over 100.00coolbrze wrote:I own a FC and someone asked me if I'd ship frozen semen. I called a couple in my area and there's a lot more too it than what I thought. They want a DNA test ($10), brucellosis test ($45), extraction ($75), $250 to freeze it in liquid nitrogen containers, $100-$150 for storage, $40 for a general exam, & they weren't sure on the total Fedex for S&H.
They will then extract into X amount of "straws" depending on the quality and how many breedings I want.
Dang, I think driving 1/2 way across the country and staying in a decent hotel would be cheaper than this!

Your vets are a little higher than mine but, yes! its an expensive proposition and honestly the only reason I've frozen semen on some of my boys is for myself to use down the line or if perhaps something happened to the dog. You can either drive across the country or the easiest thing to do is just ship the bitch to the dog. Its not that expensive but, at todays gas prices its probably cheaper than driving. Another option of this is someone you know well is letting them borrow your dog for several matings. They will then extract into X amount of "straws" depending on the quality and how many breedings I want.

Just some thoughts,

PS: You could also do a chilled semen collection. That isn't too pricey and works well if the bitch owner does progesterone testing. When I ship chilled semen (not frozen) I have the bitch owner pay for all expenses involved with the collection and shipping.

How long will that frozen stuff last? If I remember right a friend of mine had a dog produced by breeding a bitch to her long dead great grandpa. Rumor has it that dogs produced this way are sometimes deficient in their immune system and are more likely to get cancer and other fatal diseases... anybody else heard that?
I know of several litters from 20 year old + sperm. I don't think that these dogs are any more likely to be sick than any other normally conceived puppy. Or, I haven't heard of any problems and we've been using frozen in cows, horses and dogs for a LONG time. Humans too for that matter ;-)Larry G wrote:How long will that frozen stuff last? What's the diff. in frozen vs. chilled? Is the chilled the same thing minus the freezing part? How long does it last?Windkist wrote:PS: You could also do a chilled semen collection. Chilled is a fresh collection that is mixed with extender. The collection is then packed in a box with ice packs like your vaccines come with and shipped to the Bitches vets office. This has to be done Fedex overnight and she should be inseminated the next day which is why its crucial to have progesterone done. You can order a shipper from ICSB but, I just use my old vaccine boxes that are lined with styrofoam. My vet has the extender at his office.coolbrze wrote:Windkist wrote:What's the diff. in frozen vs. chilled? Is the chilled the same thing minus the freezing part? If a dog is older or doesn't have good sperm motility then they can't freeze them because the sperm when unthawed will not be good enough to impregnate a bitch. A lot of people wait until their dog is old then panic and by then its too late. IF you have a really good one you will want to freeze them by 2 years old if possible. The younger the better.bill (flint river ) wrote:iwas talking to mr. karpan( branko) a few months back and he told me it coast him $1000 per breeding. promblem some sperm doesnt freeze. he tryed lumber jack, prop, ali baba, there was one more. and ali baba was the only one that would freeze. he said he has 20 breeding froze from him.

The pellets do have a higher rate of sperm recovery after unthaw but, the straws seem to do fine as well. My vet uses straws and we've had no trouble using it.
I pay 80.00 a year to store mine. You might get 40 pellets from one collection but, not 40 breedings. 1 pellet or 1 straw does not equal 1 breeding. It takes several and is determined by the amount of sperm in the collection and how it recovers unthawed. My last collection the dog produced enough for 4 matings and there were 12 straws I believe.
