tail docking
I think the key word there is " castrating " and that is why it is not reccomended for use on dogs... The intended use is not for docking their tails. If you have a deep bawl mouth male you might try the castrating tool for it's intended use and change him to a squeely mouth...
Seriously I have used the tool and the band and also have a hunting partner that has and have had no problems.. The bleeding before the docking was creating more problems with blood loss and anemia.. One of my buddies females would stop to chew on hers at times while running.. No problems with that since he docked her 3 yrs, ago...

the key is to shave the tail down where you are putting the band,,,,,,right before you set the band pull the skin on the tail towards the dogs but this allows there to be more skin to cover the end of tail after it falls off,,,,,,here is a pic of my dog that had his banded and it just fell of yesterday,,,,,,,

so this takes 3-4 weeks to fall off? what if it goes longer? is that panic time....or do some just take longer? I dont want to end up in the vets office trying to explain myself. spca type people im sure would hang you out to dry over this.
im trying this tomorrow. my dogs tail is never going to heal. and it has to be terribly painful for him.

jeff,,,,,,take your fingers and feel the vertabrate in his tail as talked about pull the loose skin foward and put the ring between the vertabrates,,,,,after the ring is on there about an hour the tail will start to die,,,,,just keep an eye on it, mine was on for a month but he had a thick tail, each dog is different,,,,i hunted mine the very same day as it fell off, i didnt band mine dause it kept getting bloody i banded mine cause it was broke or he was born with a near hook that kept getting caught on vines and briars,,,,,,,

You might want to run a course of amoxicillin as well so, as not to get an infection.jeff wrote:sounds good. im going for it tomorrow. this dogs tail is beyond healing. it stays open all the time. raw meat being abused over and over. i can barely look at it anymore

Thats good news!! The band couldn't hurt worse than a constant raw bleeding tail.jeff wrote:banded my dogs tail this morning. the dog never flinched. hasnt messed with it at all. i saw him lick at it once or twice. within a few minutes the raw part of his tail started to dry up. he already seems relieved

just wondering if anyone has had any problems doing this? i have the same thing going on over here. the vet wants 350.00 to dock the tail. ouch! i have access to the bands and tools and the antibiotics. just a little worried something will go wrong for me. i have some money invested in this dog and is on his way at the hunts. just a little scared...
Full circle i know what you mean. my dogs tail was so damaged I was left with two options. 1. do the band 2. pay my vet $350 right here at christmas. i had to go with option 1! i could tell after an hour or two the tail was already starting to die. it went from very raw and bloody to dry and turning very dark. the dog actually feels better, i know that doesnt sound right but he does. i figure if something goes wrong i'll deal with it when it happens. only thing that i can forsee happening is infection if you dont use antibiotics along the way. the tail cant go without that blood supply so once that band is on, i think its a done deal. but this is my first time trying it so we'll see. good luck

Since Jeff just did it successfully why don't you 2 get on the phone. It can't be very difficult and I think 350.00 is a joke for such a minor procedure too. Actually I think the band sounds a little bit more humane anyway. With the band there are no stitches for the dog to bother and in my opinion less chance of a infection. 1 250mg amoxicillan twice a day for 1 week will keep any infection away. I have always done my own dewclaw removal. Years ago we had cockers and I docked their tails too and the 1 time I had a vet do it they all became infected.
