Cherry eye

Post by RES »

Does anyone know how long a dogs eye should take to look normal again after having surgery for cherry eye? I have a young female that had the repair done where the tissue is sewn back in place, not actually removed. When I picked her up from the vet, I was suprised that the eye still looked the same as it did before the surgery. The tissue was still hanging out. I was told by the vet that this was due to swelling from the surgery and that the eye should return to normal in a few days. It's been a week now since the operation, and I don't see much of an improvement. Thanks for your input.

When they "tuck" those tear glands with a stitch instead of removing them, there is the possibility that they can pop back out. It's best to keep the tear gland whenever possible, but if I had to make more than two trips to tuck it in - I'd go for removal and use eyedrops before and after running. That just me.

Bev if you had to make more than two trips the third should be to a different veterinarian. Removing the gland is quite harmful to the eye and is nearly tantamount to malpractice IMHO. Yes, by a week post-op it should lookm fairly normal. Have you had him rechecked?

Well, I would, but my favorite vet took his hiney up to Michigan and left me with only one other vet. :(

We miss your common sense approach. You always manage to see the trees inspite of the forest. Welcome back!
