Sick Pup

Post by dan grimes »

I have a nine month old pup that got very sick. She had tore a bunch of bubble wrap insalation out of her dog box and at first I thought she had eaten some of it. The day before she was fine, but the day she did it she got really sick. She tried to throw up, but it was just white foam. When she had a bowel movement she just sprayed bloody water. I rushed her to the emergency and they took x-rays, but her stomach and bowels showed nothing but gas and no blockage. They said she must have some kind of infection and gave me some anti-biotics. They told me if she wasn't better in 24 to 48 hours to take her to my regular vet. By next morning she was a lot worse. Still throwng up and passing watery blood only not hardly able to stand. I took her to my regular vet and they put her on I-V's. They told me she should be better by morning if it was the insalation. The next morning came and she was no better. They then told me they thought she had Parvo and gave her a 50/50 chance to live. I told them to run the test to make sure. The test came back the next day and it was negative for Parvo. By then she was starting to show a slight improvement. She kept getting better a little day by day. They told me she ate good this morning for the first time since she got there. I am to call them later today and they said she may be able to go home. This whole thing has lasted one day short of a week. They told me that they honestly don't really know what it was because she never passed any insalation and she showed negative for Parvo. I really don't know what to think now. I have two other dogs kenneled with her and they haven't shown any signs of being sick. I do know that this has been really costly!! Has this ever happened to anyone else? Dan

You might consider that she had/has clostridium perfringins. It is a bacterial infection that can be brought on by stress. Diet changes, travel, exhersion, etc. The symptoms are quite a bit like parvo, as it effects the gut in a similar way.
Some call it enterotoxin or enteristis.
Here is some info on it. A member at our club had three dogs in 5 days die with it (seemingly overnight).
