What Makes a Good Trial Dog?
Not all dogs that run rabbits are field trial dogs. Just curious what everyone's opinion is. In the three dogs I run in LP, I see one with a bigger nose that often gets him in trouble, and two that seem more competitive. Two hunt a little harder than the other, but all three have enough hunt. Is it ...

Re: 2016 ARHA LP Spring Nationals March 5,6,7
Michigan's recent snowstorm will be pretty much a field note next week. Temps are expected in the 40-55 degree range for a few days so the snow will be all but gone. Should be excellent scenting and running.

Spring Nationals are two weeks away. Early registration will be March 4 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Registration Saturday March 5 is 4:00 to 7:00 a.m. We had mid-50 temps and most of our snow is gone or greatly reduced. Bucks are on the move looking for females and the running has been very good. For inf...

Re: Gearing Down Or Cold Trailing ?
Interesting post. I have four litter mates two males two females. Only one of my males "opens early." But they all open when they hit scent. I have seen them track a rabbit over an old railroad grade that was basically small stones. Today, the early opening male opened and jumped a rabbit. He carrie...

Re: Gearing Down Or Cold Trailing ?
I have a dog that opens when he smells a rabbit. He has minused out several times in trials, but I have also seen him take a track that others can't smell. If I'm going hunting, he's the dog I'll take. Sometimes it takes longer than the allotted three minutes LP allows, but given time he'll track it...

Re: Ok need some young dog opinions
I'm not a fan of running pups with a pack. They learn their place is at the back. I agree; I'd solo him until he can handle his own and then run him with an older, slower dog. I think when they run at the back of the pack, they don't develop confidence and rely on the others. I'm no pro, just my opi...

Re: RUNNING A RABBIT STIFF
The three or four times I've seen it, I think the rabbits stopped to rest, cramped up and the dogs caught them. At least that's the way it seems.

Re: Good beagle trash talk expressions?
I was running my beagles at a bird dog clinic in Kansas. Jim, the host, asked if he could go along. "I've never seen a dog run a rabbit." well Sam opens with a squalling bawl, and Jim says, "If that was my dog, I'd wonder what the hell was wrong with him!"

Disaster or Perfection
I don't know if I should be mad or elated. Today the power company cleared under the lines that cross our property. Gone are the dogwood thickets and berry canes. Dozens of trees that could have been used for firewood have been pulverized to shreds. They used some type of a machine that works like a...

Re: Hunt and Search. Genetic or training or both?
Hunt--either they have it or they don't and no amount of trips to the field is going to put it there!! Now a dog with hunt that sits in a kennel without much exposure to rabbit isn't going to be top notch either. Find one with hunt and feed it tracks and rabbits in multiple environments and you will...
