Re: COTTONTAIL BRED DOGS

Joe Parrino in NY has some linebred DFJ hounds in most of his dogs I believe. He would be a guy to contact for more info as I believe he has a lot of first hand knowledge of those hounds himself or thru his dad.
Real good guy to chat with or deal with for that matter.

Re: COTTONTAIL BRED DOGS

Deerhost wrote, and I've seen hare dogs that were so rough they could not run a cottontail Ha,ha,ha.. thats nothin, I've seen them rough enough they could not run a hare  Personally I think the passion for speed is putting a lot of hare bred lines in jeopardy of becoming worthless in all but ...

Re: COTTONTAIL BRED DOGS

I agree Deerhost, there is a difference and I like your thought process of infusing hare bred blood with a slower cottontail style or vice versa. I've been doing similar and like the results.....so far. However it should be noted there are plenty of fellows that have been breeding a hare running sty...

Re: Hound speed

Thanks for the nice words on Boomer guys. The baggage appears usually only when the scenting is ideal, which around here isn't often even when it isn't winter. Some cold tracking, but not much as I tend to hit the woods mid day usually. You'll get some re-running in the old trench, likely to happen ...

Re: Hound speed

You're gonna have to put up with some baggage when the running is good Dave to get hounds that can run in the tough stuff ;) Gettin off topic some but here's a real short clip from the other day. We hit -40 that morning on the stick. The radio said with the wind chill it was -51 celsius (-59 F) @ 8 ...

Re: Hound speed

Anthony, She found her limits yesterday. It was high temp of 3 deg F -5 overnight and 12-14" of dry powder snow. She didn't like to swim in snow to find rabbit and when she found a hare it was 10 min at slow pace and she lost it never to recover it. Not impressive.....would like to own a pair that ...

Re: Hound speed

Kinda funny that there are guys out there deliberately breeding dogs that outrun their "brains" so to speak yet the dog gets all the blame for not having any

Re: Hound speed

Mybeagles wrote, I have been watching several UBGF hounds run and their "culls" are the ones I like. The ones a little to fast to stay with pack and hunt little wider. You should call Bud....he's got some funny stories from running with his cousin in Indiana who's a UBGF fanatic. I'm fed up with fas...

Re: Hound speed

Dave, I hope that isn't the case....lol....I've got a bitch here that is basically half "large pack on hare" bred & half what most would consider a fast UBGF style. For years this bitch has done much of what BC describes in his post....haul ass to keep up but you could have named her "janitor" becau...

Re: Hound speed

Had a 100 guys tell me about the hound that runs fast in good conditions and slow in bad conditions I just haven't seen such a hound.....what I have seen is fast hounds that ease up a little but still way to rough to run in tough conditions...I've also seen the medium speed hounds gear up a bit in ...

Re: FC !!!! snow dogs.or not!!!!

No offense taken at all Sao, I don't sweat this internet chit chat much. Like I wrote, you seem like a nice enough guy, and you come off as very boastful on here, that's all. I've never seen your dogs run....so how could I have an opinion one way or the other? In all seriousness, I really would like...

Re: FC !!!! snow dogs.or not!!!!

Now the story is you were too busy? Doesn't it seem a little odd that you advise Deerhost he would have no problem running in northern Minnesota (which may or may not be the case).......yet you yourself won't come up and run? I won't need to tell Bud anything....he can read just fine. Sao, your dogs...

Re: FC !!!! snow dogs.or not!!!!

Sao, I believe Bud invited you & or your brother to come north and run and you wouldn't do it until conditions improved??? What gives?

Re: FC !!!! snow dogs.or not!!!!

I agree with you.... I think crust can be tough to run on anywhere. Interested to read what you would think if your dogs couldn't run on fresh snow?
