Re: Run to catch
Don't know if any of you are having this experience. Leaving tomorrow for 10 days of hare hunting in the north country. Not looking forward to the 1,200 mile drive but definitely looking forward to being there. In preparation, I needed to replace my old Lacrosse Alpha Burley boots. Called L.L.Bean a...

Re: Heat Stroke-tendencies
I'm sure a lot of it has to do with age and conditioning and acclimation to the temps. where the dog lives and is conditioned to. I'd have to believe that generally speaking younger hounds tolerate heat better than older ones. Same as us humans. My 33 year old son can out work me in the heat any day...

Re: Run to catch
S.R.Patch Wow ! that's a pretty weird cycle for your bitch. As you mentioned, my females usually come back in heat 6-7 months after their pups are weaned. Hard to believe her body can recover from cycling and gestation and be prepared to breed again in that amount of time. I used to coon hunt with a...

Re: Run to catch
Hey Daddy Rabbit. Hope all is well with you and the hounds. The dog not in the pic is my bluetick,Josie, Spit's mother. She was crashed out with the others, just didn't make the picture. No, I haven't bred her since Spit's litter which was 2 1/2 years ago now. I am thinking about raising a litter ou...

Re: Run to catch
Been a long hot and humid summer here in Tn. So glad to be getting morning temps in the 50's. I probably ran my dogs less this July and August than I ever have. Got them out about once a week for 2-3 hours. Just enough to keep them in some kind of shape and keep their edge wore off. As I've gotten o...

Re: Night running
Hey Daddy Rabbit
Is Spit the daddy to Jazz' 10 pups?
Hope your females can raise all those pups for you. That's a bunch but I know you've been there before.
Good luck and will give you a call soon.

Re: Night running
Daddy Rabbit He wasn't a Field Champion. Just a good gundog that goes back to some of my breeding, owned by my good friend Peter Burns of Puckett Creek Beagles. Queen was in her 12'th day and both dogs were very willing and had a good tie. Bandit is 6 years old and had never bred before. It was a on...

Re: Night running
Daddy Rabbit It brings me a lot of joy and satisfaction to hear you are so pleased with that Spit dog. I've gotten good reports on his litter mates that are scattered around the country. Bob Ferranti in N.H. and his son Ryan in Vt. are very pleased with their two females. James Best in N.C. likes hi...

Re: Run to catch
Do you know your closest hunting buddy of all ? He's the type that regardless of conditions will go if you go. Regardless of what tomorrow is, if you stay out late, that's okay with him. Regardless of who else you invite, he'll go if you go. Regardless of what time you call him, he eagerly wants to ...

I'm sure you've talked with Mark Trudell and Vic Costanza in regards to them knowing where some of that breeding might be?

Re: Running a pack on hare in deep snow
That's a nice looking hound and built the way I like. Back in the '70's I was doing some bear and cat hunting with a couple of brothers from Vermont. They used to do a lot of their cat hunting in New Hampshire. When N.H. put a moratorium on hunting bobcats they didn't know what to do with their houn...

Beagle Huntsman You're probably right. Didn't mean to answer my own questions and not leave others room to give their in-put. Just trying to initiate some discussion with the random beagle thoughts that bounce around in my head...... When I see that a post has had over a 1,000 views I know this site...

WOW ! I posted the above post 8 days ago and it's had over 1,000 views. And NOT ONE RESPONSE ! Come on folks. This site can be a good place for beagle chat, exchange of ideas and just staying in touch with like minded folks. But it only works if you participate. I know a lot of beaglers left this si...

Re: Run to catch
Curious as to what some of your thoughts are when selecting a stud for your female. Do you insist on a stud who has proven himself in competition? Does he have to be a Field Champion or an International Field Champion? If you go in this direction is it because of his reputation, because the pups wil...
