The second season rule of thumb works pretty well for beagles. They mature faster than some breeds. Ideally a female is mentally and physically mature before needing to whelp and raise a litter. Not sure about using the theory of breeding em to give them maturity. Breeding an immature female could b...

tiffinis, I understand how you see that as contradictory. It is called waterless shampoo because you don't have to use water like with regular shampoo. If a little gets left on wont be as irritating as regular shampoo might be. I prefer to rinse it off by dumping some water on and then dry. I show i...

Hard to tell from the pictures. Some things to consider: What is their motion like. Do they reach strait out and cover plenty of ground with the front. No wasted or circular motion in the front pastern joint. Does the rear foot contact ground just behind the front foot(bring em out of the grass and ...

Hard to tell from the pictures. Some things to consider: What is their motion like. Which one free stacks more correct than the other. Do they stack up naturally with hocks parallel. When standing naturally do the front legs fall straight down below the withers (indicating a well laid back shoulder)...

WV JAZ, I also run dogs in competition. Wouldn't worry too much about a little mud. I use a waterless shampoo that works really good. Just squirt it on legs and chest suds it up, rinse with water and towel dry. A fairly quick process. I have a hound glove that removes some of the briars etc. Again t...

Best of luck with the showing. The registry has some say on grooming. For the AKC shows cutting the wiskers is more important than in IKC all breed shows. UKC recomends they not be trimmed. At shows from either registry get together with the other exhibitors and they will give you some grooming tips.

The dogs in the UKC National and World hunt are primarily from the hunting beagle world. They do not yet have the excellence of some of the AKC show beagles. The process is in motion to develop total dogs that are excellent in both structure and hunt. It is a young program that is seeing great progr...

Nothing safer or better than Purina puppy chow. Purina has better quality control. They do not import ingredients to put in puppy chow. Much of the dog food problems involve ingredients being imported and that is where the risk comes from. Many of the less expensive feeds rely on imported ingredient...

TC, It may be true that the AKC show beagles in your area are poor quality dogs that do not have the physical structure to run a rabbit. I haven't been to an AKC show in the south for a long time. I also agree that the politics in AKC are out of hand. AKC shows still have many quality beagles. The m...

I believe it IS important to imunize against Kennel caugh. Especially with a dog you are traveling with to shows or hunts. Part of the problem of spreading it around when your dog is not imunized and has it is that they may have it several days before showing symptoms. You are spreading it before yo...

TC, I have shown in both AKC and UKC and so I will try to answer your question as tactfully as possible. It would help if I could see the dog you are refering to. Leah made an important point in that a beagle should have an elegant look. This look is due to the type of muscle that is correct for a b...

Crawling into bed with the antis and siding against any kind of performance dogsport event is not condoned by me. Neither is abusing the "4 legged athletes" that are involved in these events. Animal abuse is wrong in any venue. Ididarod dogs love what they do just as my beagles love running rabbits ...
