Re: Show dog VS field dog conformation
Funny thing, the show bred bitch I own who does have what would be average hunt - she has that awful front movement as well It's terrible. Very overly clumsy, not agile at all, and takes twice the effort to cover as much ground as my field breds. I'm not exactly sure why ... could be her back is pr...

Re: Show dog VS field dog conformation
There's always going to be a few who say their show dogs could go win the trials because they will bark at squirrels, have superior conformation, etc. etc. well I say the way to impress would be to enter those worthies and let that speak for you. There are professional handlers that would start, tr...

Re: Show dog VS field dog conformation
Now, let's settle one question.... can the full show bred dogs earn their keep in the field? The answer is "NO".... with very few possible exceptions mostly based on owner bias. Beaglebrit got pumped over the possibility, wonder what happened? We who had been down the same road just smiled in amuse...

Re: Show dog VS field dog conformation
Honeypot..Congratulations on a wonderful trip to NY. Your girl looks lovely on the table. In my post I wasn't infering that show dogs could not run but instead that judging fads and popular styles be it in the field or in show influence our breeding decisions, and that in turn can influence the look...

Re: Show dog VS field dog conformation
To address the speed issue, the major fault of the show bred beagle in the field is not lack of speed, but rather too much for its nose. They tend to be very tight mouthed and hot nosed as well as rough. I have found that to be very true also. And if you address that issue with show breede...

Re: Show dog VS field dog conformation
The Breed, Beagles, has a definite split, as does Labs, German Shepards and numerous other breeds. The show fancy will breed what it takes to win, and follow any fad or style to achieve those wins....hock walking Shepards, Labs so Fat that they would sink any Jon Boat, etc. The trialer will breed wh...

Re: Boy talk about dead, so what about angles
[
When I get a loin at the butcher shop it is basically a back section and is cut. It is my understanding that the loin MUSCLE extends up past part of the last ribs. Well...I am retired and have a part time job as a butcher at our local Kroger Store..so I know something of cut loins!!! and I...

Re: Boy talk about dead, so what about angles
[quote"] The more back area that a dog has the more loin area is there. Shorter backs constitute a shorter loin. Can you have a short backed dog with a long loin?[/ quote] That is not necessarily true..Shorter back does not equal shorter loin......The back length is composed of the rib and the loin....

Re: Boy talk about dead, so what about angles
it is in the loin area that I see the problem too, when the dog is to long it is the loin area. I just couldn't come up with the words... I feel you are very correct in this making the dog weak and tending to have more back issues!I
You can have a dog that is long but still cobbby...
