Re: what do you look for when choosing a pup?

IMHO, By the time you get to the breeders, you should have done your homework. Checked out bloodlines, maybe seen the parents run, etc. So, all else being equal, you might just as well pick the pretty one. ^^ +1000 Unless you have seen the pups a number of times there's no way to judge temperament....

Re: Derby dates?

My understanding is:

July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011 is a 2012 Derby
July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012 is a 2013 Derby

Re: jump vs hunt

One more trait I didn't mention was consistent. I have seen some good hounds have an excellent day jumping rabbits, but the real jump dog can do it consistently in different conditions. I'm not a big pack hunter, but you describe the goal pretty accurately by saying the pack working as a one machine...

Re: jump vs hunt

KYrabbithunter , let me add to that , not only can it find the last rabbit in 100 acres it wont waste all day doing it either , it will find it quick ! ^^Agreed, I've got one that has everything else, but is a little slack in the get there quick department. The best two jump dogs I've ever had the ...

Re: jump vs hunt

The difference is a true jump dog is the rarest of dogs while almost every dog has hunt (if a beagle doesn't have good hunt it should be Kulled....period). IMO there's different levels of Jump. Some dogs just don't have it all, some are pretty good, and a select few are jump experts. I consider a go...

Re: Pictures of your hounds.. necessary??

Pictures are a good idea, I think they do two things: 1) they give you something to circulate if one comes up missing 2) If you find one, they help prove that it's your dog. Not sure about the branding, but the tattoo helps. You can also get the microchips that have you registered as the owner. I th...

I'd keep an eye on craigslist and that beagle sales site as well.

They also have a sale at the Somerset (Science Hill) Stockyard on Fridays. If I were you, I'd be there. I think they generally start at 8:00 Eastern

Re: Terminology,

The ones I see the most: 6 month - 18 month dogs..."haven't had time to start" / tried everything possible and the dog just won't run a rabbit Dog hunted over hard all season/ dog hasn't been out of the kennel in months...that's why it's nails are an inch long (a word of advise- if your going to cla...

Nice video and good looking dogs.

Not to hijack the thread, but since you did such a good job with the video, I'm curious what speed everyone considers these dogs.

Re: Rabbits were not good participants today.

I also had the opposite. I was running solo and had one race for close to three hours with very few checks. I hadn't seen the rabbit and was beginning to wonder what the old man was doing, so I took a young pup out and walked him ahead of the race to see if we could get a sight of the rabbit. When t...

Re: Your thoughts...tracking by sight in snow

IMO, the dogs were using there noses.....you and your dad just had something visual to confirm what they were doing. In the same situation without the snow I don't think the dogs would have run any differently. I've seen many dogs run tracks with their heads up (some higher than others), and I've se...

Re: Nighttime running

Due to my work schedule 75% of my running is at night. I'm fortunate to live in the middle of about 250 acres with an average rabbit population. I have never noticed any difference in the jump ability and IMO opinion the dog's either got it or it don't. Regardless, the benefits of running at night o...

Re: Fish Oil

I've tried fish oil, canned salmon, and some of the items marketed towards dogs. After trying different things I've settled on ground flax seed. It provides I higher amount of Omega 3 without the issues related to fish oil. A couple teaspoons mixed in their food 2-3 times a week is sufficient. I buy...
