Re: Naturally Straight Rabbit Dogs
I start all my young hounds in my pack and only with my own hounds. I start taking them at 8-9 months when they are big enough and mature enough to keep up. The puppies learn a lot from the old hounds on what or what not to run, and if I hear a puppy opening and the old hounds aren’t going, I bring ...

Re: History Question!
Ken: FC Jerry’s Little Charlie from about 30 years ago was bred and owned by Terry Ward of Seminary, MS. Terry was the breeder of the Boggy Holler line, and for awhile was very successful at Deep South trialing and had several different hounds advertised at stud. Many hounds people call “Weir Creek”...

Re: Who is Wayne D.Gross ?
Patch didn’t say anything about paying for the English pedigrees. And at $6, Wayne is not making anything for his work. A non-issue in my opinion.

Re: Who is Wayne D.Gross ?
Wayne has done an awful lot of good work for people for very little financial reward. I read SR Patch’s 2020 post above where he seemed to be upset that Wayne received English beagle pedigrees from him and might use the information to sell a pedigree (for $6!!). There are so few English hounds in th...

Re: question
The fabric uppers on most Mucks, or similar brands, does not hold up well to briars. I use Dan’s boots in the 12 inch style with fabric uppers, but I protect them with my briar pants. Even under my briar pants, they occasionally get nicks in the fabric.

Re: Run to catch
I agree with you, Dana. Anyone can shoot a rabbit, but it takes good hounds to wear one down and catch it. How do you keep them from eating the rabbit? Mine make lunch of them!

Re: I have a question ..........
I have never given much thought to it, but my casual observation seems to be my pack has better runs before a front passes than after. I also have seen times when rain the night before should give good running only to be disappointed. And I agree fog always seems to be good scenting, especially when...

Re: Run to catch
Congratulations on such a long run. Your hounds did a lot of work in that time, and maybe saving that rabbit will allow him to pass on his genes for stamina and bravery! I always run 14-18 hounds and seldom get a long chase. If I get one to stay above ground over an hour, I consider him to be in tro...

Re: Hounds and Hunting / Better Beagling
Swampman: The former supporters of Better Beagling pulled their support as soon as they heard she was combining the magazines. They didn’t give her a chance to prove she could make something of it. It’s not really what made her time as editor/owner unsuccessful, but it certainly didn’t help. I hope ...

Re: Run to catch
Chris, Elora was way back in the 1880s to early 1900s. We all have Elora behind our hounds. Yes, there is a wealth of information on this Board under "Search". It's one reason I hope this Board is never taken down.

Re: Run to catch
Warddog, that type of coonhound would soon get you into trouble these days. In the 1970s, you could hunt anywhere. In 2021, everything is posted and there are cameras taking your photo. Deer hunting especially has changed the hound hunting landscape. I think two main reasons I want mine to hunt clos...

Re: Run to catch
I read about foxhounds being “Balboa” hounds. When you turned them out, they headed west to find a fox or the Pacific Ocean - whichever came first. I am sure your hounds are not like those, Dana.

Re: Run to catch
Interesting post, Dana. In other parts of the country, the UGBF hounds are running much faster. The UGBF needs to decide what they are going to promote. Sounds like in your area, they are still running 90s style hounds. I hated those, but I think I would like what they run in Indiana or Kentucky tod...

Re: Run to catch
I bought a female puppy from Owen Bradford in late 1979. I’ll never forget that drive from Ohio to Alabama to get her. She was by Little Ireland’s Bimbo and out of a Gay Baker female. She made a good solid hound. Won and placed several times at early gundog trials. Did lots of gunning over her. She ...
