My statement about luck was basically in general, whether it be the first day or any other time in rifle season. However, you are right, it's even tougher the second week, cause most of the bucks that are on accessable land have had lead thrown at them. Seems like most of the deer are completely noc...

Very, Very nice buck. Hate to say it, but to shoot a big buck in PA with a rifle or shotgun is going to be based almost entirely on luck at this point. Like someone already posted the days of "good deer hunting" in PA are long gone I'm afraid. There just too much unhuntable ground at this point, eit...

I feed Hi Standard, 26/18. I've tried several different feeds over the past few years, and have stayed with the Hi Standard. The lower end Purina (Regular adult)is near the bottom of the list of what I have fed, it's junk IMO. The higher end Purina is near the top of my list, but it's too pricey for...

I took her out the other day with just one other dog. The dog she gets along the best with. They ran 2 rabbits together. I'm going to keep her with just that dog and see how she does.

I'm a rabbit hunter. The PA season started 2 weeks ago, shot a limit opening day. I've shot 10 all together and had fellas along that got another 4 off my dogs. I run all year round at mostly the same grounds I hunt. Shooting a few rabbits isn't going to destroy your population, at least it hasn't m...

Thanks for all the advice, has given me some ideas to try. Going to start by only running her with one dog, and putting her in the box if she won't pack. Then go from there.

Her first heat has came and went, probably about a month or so ago.

This is where it get confusing for me. When I let this dog out to go pee in the morning, she goes and runs rabbits for 3 hours. Today, she has begged all day to go running. I did put her back in the box yesterday when she wouldn't run. I've stopped letting her run when it's time to go do her busines...

Pine Ridge, I have gun hunted her, have shot 2 or 3 rabbits over her, and another 1 or 2 when she was at my feet, although she couldn't see the rabbit. She's tasted blood, that's what really concerns me. Yesterday when she was at my feet and wouldn't run, I shot one and let the two that ran it have ...

Runs the first rabbit, then won't pack.

I have a 10 month old pup that has a ton of raw talent, excellent nose, good search and jumping ability, very nice speed. Here's the problem... She's noted for running the first rabbit with the dogs, then after that coming out and sitting at my feet. Sometimes she goes back in later, other times she...

The thick cover makes one tend to try "spot shooting" the rabbit, instead of "swing through" on the rabbit, which usually means, you'll hit behind the critter. Boy did you ever hit the nail on the head for me. I was 0 for 5 Saturday morning, caught myself doing just that. Redeemed myself some in th...

I have a female that is the same way, took her 10 miles yesterday, she puked on they way there, I cleaned out the box with creek water. Ran for a while, loaded her up and brought her back, and when I got home, same mess. It happens everytime I expect her to travel more than 15 minutes. Her father wa...

I look forward to seeing my 2 young dogs run to the gun for the first time, IMO after that first rabbit is shot over them they always show a little more desire. Can't wait to get the older dogs out too, I love the excitement you see in them when you go out there with that gun to let them out of the ...

I think the problem with trying to sell grade dogs is that most people are aware of how hard it is to sell them. No matter how good a grade dog is people seem to be skeptical anymore, and it really is wrong, I know there are some grade dogs that are probably as good or better than half the FC's. Hec...

Here in PA our season starts next month. Unless we've gotten a frost I won't be shooting. We've usually gotten a frost by then though. I think use of good judgement is the key here. If you aren't going to use the rabbits don't shoot them. I will add another opinion I have though on rabbit population...
