Re: Training young dogs with a shock collar

Start by having a dummy shock collar for both pups. Get them used to wearing it in and out of the kennel, and having it put on and off. Every time you take the pups out the dummy collars need to go on. Once you have them accustomed to the dummy routine, usually at least 3-4 weeks, just slip the live...

Re: gauge-choke-shot size- location

Duke, My experience mirrors what you are saying, most hunters use to much choke and to large of shot size. Shooting your favorite choke/load combination at paper will tell you the real story. My ideal all around pick for a rabbit gun would be a 20 or 28 gauge, improved cylinder, and #7 1/2 shot. I d...

Re: Montana Help...

found this link on a Google search http://www.beagleswest.com/ Don't know anything about them except for what the web site says. Looks like their emphasis may be on pet quality dogs rather the hunting dogs. It wouldn't hurt to check them out, as they do refer to hunting beagles a couple of times. Th...

Re: Sex of rabbits killed

Years ago I noticed that most rabbits killed were bucks, if you let them be circled at least once before shooting. About 90% bucks if I recall correctly. Speed can also be a factor. I've hunted with people who ran slower Brace type hounds, and the sex ratio was pretty close to 50/50, maybe even a fe...

Re: GAUGING A HOUND

I do something l;ike that though as I always ask the seller if they are in good physical shape or have someone who runs with them that is? If I get a yes, then I ask what does it take in people language to keep up with the dog? Some say crawl behing on all fours. Some say walk fast, Some say slow tr...

Re: Calling all westerners

Good Idea SMytyk  :!: I'm in NE Nebraska, near Yankton SD, Norfolk NE and Sioux City IA. My forage seed business finds me traveling NE, KS, SD, IA, and ocassionally MN, MO, CO, WY, and ND. I don't mind travelling to hunt and run dogs. Now that I have a full time hired man for our grazing busin...

Re: Anyone in here from South Dakota?

I am in NE Nebraska. 30 miles SW of Yankton SD and 100 miles SE of Mitchell SD. Not many beaglers in this part of the world and seem to get fewer and farther between as you go west. I have not had a rabbit dog for a few years, but am going to look at one this weekend in IA. Not a lot of good places ...

Re: ?Nebraska, Western Iowa, S. Dakota, SW Minnesota?

BTT Was hoping to at least run across another beagler or two out my way. I don't mind running dogs and hunting by myself, but it is always nice to run with other dogs once in a while. One advantage to being isolated from other beaglers is that I have little worry of most hunting areas being shot out...

Re: ?Nebraska, Western Iowa, S. Dakota, SW Minnesota?

Same here. There is a ARHA beagle club in the Omaha NE area, which is 3 hours southeast of me. I lived in Trinidad CO for three years while I went to college. We used to jump shoot small rabbits, desert cottontails I guess, east of town in the range country. Also were a few hare west of town at high...

?Nebraska, Western Iowa, S. Dakota, SW Minnesota?

Anybody from Nebraska, Western Iowa, South Dakota, or SW Minnesota :?: I am getting back into rabbit hunting with beagles after not having a rabbit dog for several years. My 10 year old son just shot his first rabbit this year. He used to like going with me to hunt and run dogs, and shows interest i...
