One of the best chance to see some great cottontail and hare hounds are at field trial. Takes a good dog to do well on deep snow hare trial and then next weekend on sod spo on rabbit trial. It only work from deep snow to sod and not from sod to deep snow.

Best way to find out is bring some dogs and go to one. Read the rules. Stay till it's over. No format is perfect. For a hunter who hunts with just couple dogs, spo Midwest is one of the best format. They look for close, clean, independent, med fast, good nose, honest mouth, hard hunting dog.

Gogebic range beagle club in ironwood mi is having a large pack trial jan 6 and 7. Little male and female saturday, big male and female Sunday. I don't know exactly how they run this year but I believe handlers could be inside the pen similar to spo trial.

When I first started getting into akc beagle, I offered 1000 for 8 week old pups. Owner turned my offer down and said they worth $30,000 a piece. Those pups must walk on water. I like the pups but didn't like the price.
