Funky stuff on Dog's head..

I have a 3 year old gyp that has in the last 2 weeks developed nasty looking bumpy, scaly, scabs on her head. I thought at first it was scars from briars or something, but now it seems to be getting worse. My hunting buddy says it reminds him of dew poisoning that some horses get. Any ideas? Thanks....
