It's impossible to lump all trials together and say that trials as a whole are doing anything. Some are and some aren't. Some like a hound with a touch of extra mouth and some don't. Some require a hound with a great scenting ability and some don't. They are not all on the same page.

Since the beagle is a breed whose purpose is to find game and then to pursue it until accounted for then bettering the breed would seem to be breeding hounds who are best suited for that purpose.

Incidentally Gus. I hope I haven't offended you I can be a bit abrasive at times even when I don't intend to be. I've enjoyed your posts. I don't doubt you for an instant. Keep on posting.

Gus: then I stand corrected on Tom's reaction. On killing the bitch: That is my oppinion. When one purchases an older hound they know going into it what is ahead. You never indicated the reason for the old girl not being able to deliver live pups. If you got a eason from a vet or not is not known to...

The hound that outclassed them was the best hunting hound I've ever seen. She outclassed many hounds from different lines. She was also my hound and L.I. Bred.

I've had some drop out to run their own rabbit before. I've seen a hound drop out of a terribly faulty pack to run his own rabbit. And I've seen a pack of my own hounds drop out of a run because the lead hound simply left nothing for them to do, They were just along for the ride and knew it and drop...

Gamekeeper: Then your back to where I started as only a darn fool can't tell a shy dog right off. I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt with the pups but only a real rank amature don't know a shy dog when they see one. Heck even an amature can tell a shy dog right off. The fool was you for ta...

gamekeeper: As an expert or at least vary experianced houndsman you should already know that a trainer must put the welfare of the hound ahead of his own if he ever expects to be a successful trainer. He must also be knowledgeable enough and willing to take the time to get the most out of each indiv...

IN addition to the percentages of keepers by breeding there is also an element of training. I see that the socialization of pups was already discussed. Every one knows that a new pup needs to get used to his new surroundings and must be given time to adjust when he goes to a new home. It's always be...

The numbers have a way of evening out. You can have failures early and get good ones later or it can be the other way around. One thing is certain though; if you are buying or breeding hounds you will get your share of failures over the long haul. It could be sooner or it could be later it's all in ...

Back to percentages. Three of the first four L.I. hounds I got were not useful for hunting purposes for one reason or another. By your standard Gus and gamekeeper I should have condemned the line of hounds and the Dornins. I didn't figure that way though because I knew the percentsages involved and ...

Gus I can well imagine how mad Tom was with you when you put that hound down and I would wager that your L.I. days were over whether you liked it or not. Hounds just naturally give us all there devotion and the best they have through out their lives. It's only fair that we give them a nice retiremen...

I've been haveing trouble posting guys so I'm going to break my posts up into smaller blocks as I've been getting an invalid session warning. As every experianced beagler knows no breeder has a 100% success rate. The best one can hope for is a success rate of around 80% but that still leaves 20 out ...

Lloyd's Dutch Boy (call name Sean) by L.I.'s Irish x L.I.'s Bridget, was trialed some but I never herd of him earning his F.C.. He was around back in the 70"s. Actually I herd but never confirmed that something was wrong with him, some illness or another that prevented him from continueing to trial....
