Re: question on scent hounds?
All of this talk assumes that the hound is pursuing the game intending to eat it. All the hounds I have owned generally run a coon or hare until it is killed then quickly loose interest and start hunting for the next. I don't think being hungry would make any difference at all.

Re: Green Bay Jifka her 1st hare hunt.
Has this incident been reported to the Feds and MNDNR? Please make sure that it does. I know it seems like an uphill battle, but we will have no chance of getting some reasonable population management if these incidents go unreported.

Sorry to hear of your terrible loss. That has to be devastating!
Would you mind providing the specific area of Northern MN where this occurred? I live and run beagles up here and would really appreciate knowing to avoid that specific area. Thanks.

Re: Best Electronic Collar
Yes, the sportdog 2500 will handle six dogs individually . It really wouldn't make much sense to have to correct 2 dogs at the same time would it? However, I believe you do loose the tone option when you extend beyond 3 dogs. I did considerable research on both and that is why I chose the trashbreak...

Re: Dog fight
Shock one when they are posturing and thethered together and sure as H... they will think the other did it and fight back........you have only made matters worse.
So, if young dog is ornery, wanting to fight with dad, I wonder where he got the mean streak from. Ornery is genetic.

Finding a different board is certainly an option, better yet anyone could start your own board and could run it any way you like.

If there is any record, or even a possibility, that they once were there you can bet they will want to restore them. Never mind that the entire habitat they once held has been irreversibly altered, and the potential for conflict is certain.

Re: Wolf story
NorWester1, Sorry to hear about what happened to your dogs. "He theorized that the wolves had depleted the local game populations to the point where they were seeking alternative sources of food, meaning more dogs and even humans could follow." The above statement sounds alot like hunger/necessity ...

Re: The one dog hunter
I hunted one dog for a couple of years and it worked well, but I always wanted a pack. Now that I have a pack (3) the first dog is nowhere as good as she was alone. Hopefully they can eventually pull it all together.

Re: HAND HELD GPS???
I carry one all the time when hunting. Don't often need it but when you do you can't beat it. Just remember to mark the truck when you go in, shut the unit off and forget it. No eating batteries that way. Keep it in an inside pocket so it is warm if/when you need it. Done hunting, turn on unit, hit ...

Re: Natural broke beagles.
Noreast, Not sure where you are going with your post. Everyone has seen some mutts or off breed dogs that will run a rabbit or two. And as far as pet store beagles, or show beagles, I was not implying that occasionaly some of those might not make a decent rabbit hound. However, I think everyone woul...

Re: Natural broke beagles.
I can't see it being bred into the line personaly. You can train a hound to run, trail and find just obout anything. Now temperment, ie: stubborness to listen/handle may be something to do with this though. I've read before where the police tracking Bloodhounds have 1/6 beagle bred into them to red...

Re: Natural broke beagles.
Not trying to be nit-picky on the terminology. Only trying to make the point that there is a lot of difference between a dog that has been broke from deer running and one that for some reason never bothered deer in the first place.

Re: Natural broke beagles.
This topic brings up the obvious question; Have we become too dependant on electronics? Let me make it clear, I use E-collars and would never give them up. But other popular topics on sites like these are folks describing the ultimate hound, or what particular traits are most important. Among the li...

Re: Natural broke beagles.
I've got a 11 1/2 yr old beagle that has has only ran two things in his life, rabbits and pheasants. I've raised him from a pup and seen him jump a lot of deer while hunting. He would look at them and go back looking for a rabbit. I took him and 3 other dog hunting yesterday. I had one dog jump a r...
