Re: Progress made with my beagle in Virginia (VA)
I've made more progress with the dog. Rabbits were around in December 2008 and we had some really good runs on them though woods and fields. Capo did go after a deer...once...a quick zap with the collar solved that problem. After that, it was all rabbits. He's very eager on rabbits. If he sees one, ...

Thanks for Jim Umbarger and Jump Mountain Beagles
Hey everyone, Jim Umbarger of Jump Mountain Beagles invited me to run my dog recently here on the forum. I met Jim this past weekend for Capo's first rabbit hunt. It was a good time. We ran with around eight or ten dogs. Cover was thick and the vegetation varied. The dogs did get a few good runs in....

When are you planning upon going again? My goals are pretty modest: get this dog hunting!

Re: Progress made with my beagle in Virginia (VA)
What do you recommend then about getting the dog on tracks? I can do so in a very limited way in this urban environment. I am trying to find a farm that will allow me to run him. So far, it's been a wash. People in Northern VA are really, really liability conscious (with good reason). I found some f...

Re: Progress made with my beagle in Virginia (VA)
Thanks for the reply. A November hunt would be great. I just need to get it planned out. How do I sign up? I believe rabbit season starts in early November. I have yet to train the dog to the gun...I guess I'll have to take him to the skeet and trap range. Any tips on getting the dog used to gun fir...

Progress made with my beagle in Virginia (VA)
Hi all, I'm in Virginia and have been working on getting my beagle trained for rabbits. I've been quiet for awhile on the board, but have not been idle. I have acquired a Tritronics field grade collar and done basic work. Prior to that, we worked on heel-stay-come and gotten pretty good at it. Addit...

Re: Starting Pen for use near Central Virginia
There is a guy in Sutherland, Va. that has a nice starting pen. He charges 100.00 for a month including food. He has some of the best gun dog beagles in the area and will do it right, If you want his phone number I will try to find it. Sutherland is about 10 mi. south of Petersburg off of Us 460 to...

Re: Frustrated New trialer
Isn't the whole point to evaluate the dog for his fitness and ability in hunting? Since rabbit season doesn't span the whole year, we need something to do...so chasing rabbits without killing them seems to me to be productive. My attitude going into it (haven't even gone once yet...dog is still lear...

Re: Saltville Va LP hunt 5-25
Regarding this hunt: what are the opportunities for beginning hunters and dogs? I've been running my one year old dog on the few local rabbits while leashed (doesn't reduce enthusiasm) since I don't have a pen or rural area to practice in. The dog has run only five times or so, but is already using ...

Traditional Rabbit Hunting/Trialing Commands for Beagles
What commands do you typically use and what do the commands mean to you? Here are a few I use (for everyday use, not hunting), but want to sorta conform to what people typically use: Sit/Stay/Come: The usual Left: go left, no your other left! Right: go right Back: backup...as in back up on that towe...
